Join us for an adventure and help us restore the native forest on the ridge above Waimea Valley. Hānai ‘Āina workdays begin promptly at 9am with a 45 minute hike up the ridge. The group will return to the valley floor and complete the day at 3pm. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Volunteers must be able to stay for the entire event.
Participants must commit to the entire time specified above. Due to the remote location and the need for a hiking guide, leaving early is not an option.
What: This is a conservation work day -- 9am to 3pm -- aimed at restoring and protecting native forest habitat. The group will be hiking up to Kalāhe`e Ridge to plant native species, remove invasive species and participate in other conservation projects like mulching and seed collection. It is a moderate 45-minute hike up to the site.
We will provide tool, training and gloves.
This project will help us in our efforts to restore a native forest habitat in the back of the valley. The forest land will create habitat for native species, mitigate erosion, and prevent potentially harmful runoff flowing out to the ocean. It will also, over time, start to set seeds that can help to replenish native forest land in surrounding areas.
