This is a unique chance to be a part of the Waimea Valley Volunteer Team and help care for this sacred valley. Participants will be going on an exclusive hike up to the central ridgeline called Kalāhe‘e and will spend the day helping the conservation team care for the native forest land.
The day begins promptly at 9am with a 45 minute hike up the ridge. The group will return to the valley floor and complete the day at 3pm. Tasks may include: planting native species, invasive species control, mulching, and other related tasks.
Participants must commit to the entire time specified above. Due to the remote location and the need for a hiking guide, leaving early is not an option.
What:This is a conservation work day -- 9am to 3pm -- aimed at restoring and protecting the native forest habitat. The group will hike up to Kalāhe`e Ridge to plant native Hawaiian forest plants, remove invasive species and participate in other conservation projects like mulching and seed collection. It is a moderate, 45 minute hike up to the site.
We will provide tool and gloves.
What Age: Ages 12 and up are invited to attend. Any volunteers under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian go with them to volunteer.
This project will help us in our efforts to restore a native forest habitat above the Valley Floor. The forest land will create habitat for native species, mitigate erosion, and prevent potentially harmful runoff flowing out to the ocean. It will also, over time, start to set seeds that can help to replenish native forest land in surrounding areas.
